There’s a unique lake in the far northwest corner of Saskatchewan that holds a special place in my heart. It’s called Tazin and anyone who’s followed us for a while knows exactly what I’m talking about. If you’re new here, check out the first episode of season 6 of Tazin TV.
Tazin is deep, with a rumored 900-foot hole somewhere in it’s southeast corner. We searched for it last year, but with numerous jagged chasms that feature sharp drop offs make it difficult to pinpoint the exact location. We canvassed the area and found some impressive depths and we’ll share those results coming in a later episode. There are stretches of 300-400 depths that go for miles, giving old lake trout room to roam and grow big.

The body of water is relatively small when it comes to destinations that hold world-record sized lakers. It’s only about 25 miles at it’s widest and 12 miles from top to bottom. There is a big island in the middle that breaks Tazin up into four quadrants, giving you places to hide when it gets windy. This also means your boat rides are relatively short.
In this episode of Tazin TV, we opened with jigging near the lodge. This has become one of our favorite things to do. Growing up in Minnesota, it’s tradition to fish walleyes. We use walleye gear to jig for “action” lakers at Tazin. This is similar to what we do back home, except the trout fight 10x harder than walleyes. We’re catching them anywhere from 2lbs to 12lbs, so the fight is a blast.

We also like to use the heavier gear to jig for the big girls there and its easier to do when the wind lays down. Lake trout are one of the harder fish to predict and some days they bite more on cloudy days, sometimes sun works. Sometimes a chop is needed and sometimes calm days are best. While trolling has been more effective historically, when we can vertically jig them, we don’t pass up the opportunity.
After a few minutes of action trout, we decided to switch and head to big fish country. There’s no question you could catch a giant anywhere on the lake, but we have our favorite spots. Owner Trevor Montgomery and his son Bradshaw lead the way with Dan and I following behind. It didn’t take long for Trevor to hook up while Dan followed soon after with a famous Tazin Lake giant.

Episode 2 is coming soon and it features another big fish from Dan, only this time it’s a new personal best northern pike! Make sure to subscribe to the Tazin Lake Lodge YouTube channel to watch old episodes and get notified of new ones as they come out.
