Does that get your attention? If you like catching big fish, it should. It got Jeremy Smith’s attention too and he explains coming to the lodge for the first time in the above video.
We just got done recording for the Sporting Journal Radio podcast and we interviewed Kevin Heinrichs from The Royal Dutchman resort on the Rainy River and sturgeon was a big topic of discussion. When you have the ability to catch the biggest fish in Minnesota you want to do it again and again.
That’s why I love going to Tazin Lake Lodge so much. When I tell people that you can come up and catch lakers, I occasionally get responses like, “I don’t like those greaseballs,” or “Are there any walleyes?”

I understand where they’re coming from, as I’m a guy who loves to walleye fish, BUT once you hook into a 50-pound lake trout, you want to hook into another one. There just isn’t anything like the tug from a heavyweight fighter and lakers (like sturgeon) are as good as it gets.
Tazin has produced lake trout estimated to be at or even above the world record size of 72lbs. In 2019 we had a guest catch one estimated to be right around 72, using a length and girth conversion chart. While those can be a few pounds off either way, we’ve found that they are fairly accurate for ballpark weights. It’s so subjective because a world record fish might not have been an hour earlier in the day prior to eating a 5-pound burbot. Either way, it was a monster.
In 2006, there was a fish caught that was also around that size.
My first trip in 2016 ended with an estimated 56-pounder and I’ve seen multiple 60’s. I’ve been a part of some unbelievable days of fishing there, including catching a 50″ pike in 2021.

Tazin opens June 12th and there are still some openings for this summer, so you can get the trip of a lifetime booked. Contact them here.
We’ll be up there filming a new season of Tazin TV June 29th – July 13th so you might be able to join us at the lodge!
The episode posted at the top of this page is a brand new one with Jeremy Smith, Jeff Simpson and Mike Hehner from Lindner Media. They came up and joined us last summer just prior to Jason Mitchell’s appearance. Some big fish were caught, some fish stories were told and lots of fun was had.
You can see their episode by checking the Outdoor Channel schedule. Here’s the promo:
